Lesson Suggestion: Small Animals
Robert and his family are ‘small animals’ and because of that they don’t go out into the snow. Discuss what other things small animals can and can’t do. Are there things that big animals can’t do because they are so large (ie, live in a boot)? Ask the students what they can and cannot do because of their size.

Lesson Suggestion: First Experiences
Robert experiences snow for the first time. Ask students if they remember the first time they touched snow. Was it what they expected? How was it different or the same? How would they describe it? What are some other things they remember experiencing for the first time? What are some things they want to experience but haven’t yet? What are their anticipations?

Lesson Suggestion: Picture and Word
Robert thinks a big animal with red fur saves him. However, students can see that the big animal is really Santa Claus. What other clues do the pictures give to help tell the story? What parts of the story are told through the pictures and not through the words of the book? Ask students why they think that was done.
